Pipistrelle bats, a protected species, were inhabiting the existing roof space. Before work could begin, we constructed a new home for them, obtained approval from local and national bat preservation societies, and removed tiles from the roof to allow the bats to re-locate. Demolition of the old house then started on the 9th March, and the project was carried out in a 9 month window so that the clients were able to move in on the 14th December.
The new house was based around a bespoke steel frame, with contemporary features such as concrete floors containing under-floor heating throughout. As usual, we held regular client meetings to ensure high standards and attention to detail – a fine example of this being the unique oak, glass and stainless steel staircase, created within the budget.
THE ENQUIRY
The first contact was made when David Jaques helped to coach one of the clients’ children at Scott Broadwood after-school cricket.
THE BRIEF
To demolish the existing house and re-build a larger, striking modern family home.
COSTING AND PLANNING
Brighton-based architect Noel Boswijk
conducted a tender programme for the clients, and Jaques Construction was selected. A model was constructed, and, being careful to maintain the style and ‘wow factor’ of the concept designs, David Jaques worked on the specification and budget requirements alongside Noel and the clients, suggesting various options until a programme was agreed.
“Couldn’t be happier; completed on budget – and a day early. The whole experience was amazing. The house felt like our home from the day we moved in, and we still can’t believe it’s ours.”
